Premier League: GW21 Retrospect

If the festive period is any indication of my skills and decision making, then I am in for a long run to the end of the season. With so much talk, from me about using Mohammad Salah as my default captain for the remainder of the season, I made a last minute change, for fear Eden Hazard might actually show up and produce an attacking return. As it was, Hazard didn’t feature, but I was worried after some talk on Twitter Salah might not play, so I vice-captained, Marcos Alonso.

On the week it was another poor showing, just 45 points, which was the weekly average but more importantly it was another drop in the overall rankings, 74k down to 557k.  It’s four red arrows in the last 6 gameweeks, as we head into the DGW22.

The gameweek can best be described as a disaster! What looked great on paper, lining up 5 premium midfielder hasn’t really paid off to date. Salah, Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling had been the most consistent, with only Salah continuing that trend scoring 14 points on the week. However, he picked up a knee injury and may not feature in DGW22. The rest of the midfield posted just 6 points, with Sterling getting just 33 minutes, Coutinho, not returning and Hazard, as previously mentioned, benched.

Up front I knew it would be asking a lot for my budget forwards to return points, but both had been in form, however that form has slipped away. Callum Wilson and Laurent Depoitre both featured for 90 minutes, but provided no attacking returns. Moving forward this position will be addressed with Hazard being moved, replaced by a budget midfielder and a premium forward returning to the pitch.

Defensively, I should have done better, but Watford let me down again with 2 late goals to lose the clean sheet. Everton didn’t look spectacular, riding 3 clean sheets in the last 4 games, also gave up 2 goals. It was however Marcos Alonso picking up 12 points, as the vice-captain on the back of a Chelsea clean sheet. Not great, but much needed points.

In goal, David de Gea earned a hard fault clean sheet and a save point. This is more along the lines of what I expected when I brought him in for GW18. His 7 points were two better than the previous 3 weeks combined. It’s been that rough patch that continues to bite me in the ass moving forward.
